Best Dart Boards: Bristle vs Electronic, and Which to Buy
Bristle or electronic? The dart boards worth buying in 2026, from a $45 sisal board to $299 Bluetooth boards, with wire types, target sizes and cabinets.
A dart board is the cheapest table game you can add to a room, and the easiest to get wrong. The real choice is not a brand. It is bristle versus electronic, because that one decision fixes which darts you throw, how loud the wall is, whether you need an outlet, and how long the board lasts. This guide makes that call first, then names the boards worth buying at prices we checked on October 6, 2026.
Which dart board should you buy?
Most homes are best served by a staple-free bristle board in the $45 to $90 range. Families with young children, or anyone who wants the board to keep score for cricket and 01 games, should buy a regulation 15.5 in electronic board instead.
| If you want | Buy | Example (US price, Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| The real steel-tip game on a budget | Staple-free bristle board | Viper Shot King, $44.99 on sale ($52.99 list) |
| A tournament-grade bristle board | Thin-wire, WDF-accredited board | Viper Slash, $87.99 on sale ($104.99 list) |
| Automatic scoring for a family | 15.5 in electronic board | Viper 797, $125.99 on sale ($146.99 list) |
| App play and online opponents | Bluetooth soft-tip board | GRANBOARD3s, $299 on sale ($329 list) |
| A board for small children | Magnetic board | Accudart Magnetic Dartboard Set, $19.99 |
Prices are from the brand or retailer listing named in the sources section and change often, especially around the holidays.
Bristle or electronic: which type fits your house?
A bristle board is a disc of compressed sisal fibres divided by a metal wire “spider”; steel-tip darts stick between the fibres and the hole closes after the dart is pulled. An electronic board is a plastic target with thousands of small holes; soft-tip darts trigger sensors that score the throw.
| Bristle (sisal) | Electronic (soft-tip) | |
|---|---|---|
| Darts | Steel tip | Plastic soft tip |
| Size | 17.75 in board | 15.5 in target (regulation); 13.5 in on compact boards |
| Scoring | Chalk or dry-erase board, or an app | Automatic, with games built in |
| Noise | Quiet thud | Louder clack plus sound effects |
| Power | None | AC adapter or AA batteries |
| Wears out | Sisal in the high-traffic segments | Segment tips and holes, sensor contacts |
| Typical price | $30 to $140 | $30 to $300; standing cabinets more |
The type also changes your setup. Steel-tip play throws from 7 ft 9.25 in; soft-tip play is usually thrown from 8 ft. Both use the same 5 ft 8 in bull height. The dart board height and distance guide covers the full measurements.
What makes a bristle dart board good?
A good bristle board has thin, staple-free wire, dense sisal and a number ring you can remove to rotate the board. Those three things decide how many darts bounce out and how long the board lasts.
- Wire. Cheap boards hold the spider down with staples, which sit in the scoring area and deflect darts. Staple-free boards use a one-piece spider. The thinnest wires are triangular or blade-shaped, so a dart that hits the wire slides into a segment instead of bouncing out. Winmau describes the Blade 6 wire as angled at 60 degrees for exactly that reason.
- Sisal. Higher-density sisal grips the dart and closes the hole after it is pulled. Premium boards add layers of different densities: Winmau’s Blade 6 Triple Core adds a third, high-compression layer.
- Rotation. A detachable number ring lets you turn the board so the 20, treble 20 and bull area do not wear through first. Both Viper boards below have one.
Which bristle boards are worth buying in 2026?
These four boards cover the useful price range. None is a toy, all are the regulation 17.75 in size, and each has a clear reason to exist.
| Board | Wire | Notable spec | Price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viper Shot King | Staple-free circular spider, galvanized steel | 1.6 in thick, 9.1 lb, rotating number ring, includes two sets of darts and a throw line | $44.99 sale, $52.99 list (GLD Products) |
| Unicorn Eclipse HD2 | Staple-free Spider2 radial wiring | Thinner bullseye; Unicorn says it increases the bull playing area by 14% | $69.98 (Escalade Sports) |
| Viper Slash | Razor-thin staple-free spider | WDF accredited, 11.0 lb, detachable number ring | $87.99 sale, $104.99 list (GLD Products) |
| Unicorn Eclipse Ultra | Ultra Spider | Unicorn claims 33% less embedded spider in doubles and trebles | $139.99 (Escalade Sports) |
Winmau Blade 6. The Blade 6 is the board many league players already own: 450 mm across, 38 mm thick, 60-degree angled wire and Winmau’s Rota-Lock mount. Winmau lists it at £54.99 and the Triple Core at £89.99 on its UK store. We could not confirm a current US list price, so compare sellers before you buy.
Who these are not for: households with toddlers. A steel-tip dart is a sharp metal point. If small children will be in the room unsupervised, start with a magnetic or soft-tip board.
What separates a good electronic dart board from a toy?
The target size and the segments. A regulation soft-tip target is 15.5 in across; compact boards shrink it to 13.5 in, which changes how the board plays and makes a later switch to league play harder. Good segments have thin dividers and well-cut holes so darts stick instead of bouncing out.
Check four more things before buying:
- Power. Most boards run on an AC adapter, so plan an outlet near the wall. The GRANBOARD3s also runs on 2 AA batteries, and the GRANBOARD dash runs on batteries only.
- Players and games. Viper’s 797 handles up to 16 players and 43 games; the Arachnid Cricket Pro 800 handles 8 players and 40 games. Beyond about 20 games, the number matters less than whether cricket and 01 are done well.
- Noise. Soft-tip darts clack against plastic. The GRANBOARD3s puts sound-absorbing material in every segment; most budget boards do not.
- Spare tips. Soft tips break. Buy a pack of spares with the board.
Which electronic dart boards are worth buying?
The boards below all use a regulation 15.5 in target, or a full-size app board, and come from brands with replacement parts available in the US.
| Board | What you get | Price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Viper 797 | 15.5 in target, concave segment holes, ultra-thin spider, 43 games, up to 16 players, AC adapter, 1-year limited warranty | $125.99 sale, $146.99 list (GLD Products) |
| Arachnid Cricket Pro 800 | Regulation target, NylonTough segments, micro-thin dividers, 40 games and 179 variations, up to 8 players | $249.99 (Escalade Sports) |
| Arachnid Cricket Pro 800 Standing | Same board in a floor-standing bar-style cabinet with shelves | $479.99 (Escalade Sports) |
| GRANBOARD3s | Bluetooth board, app scoring and online play, 22.5 x 22.5 in overall, 6.2 lb, micro USB or 2 AA batteries | $299 sale, $329 list (GRANBOARD) |
| GRANBOARD dash | Lighter app board, 21.75 x 19.75 in, 5.5 lb, 2 AA batteries only | $149 sale, $165 list (GRANBOARD) |
Pick by how you play. If the board will mostly host family games and parties, the Viper 797 does everything that matters for about $126. If one player wants to practise against online opponents most nights, the GRANBOARD’s app is the reason to pay more. The GRANBOARD3s needs a phone or tablet running Android 9 or iOS 12 or later.
Are smart bristle boards and camera scoring worth it?
For most homes, no. They exist for players who want steel-tip feel with automatic scoring, and they cost several times more than a plain board.
- Unicorn Smartboard ($359.99, Escalade Sports, Oct 2026): a bristle board that sends each score to the Scorebuddy app over Bluetooth LE. It needs magnetised steel-tip darts; six come with it, and you can magnetise your own.
- Prodigy Automatic Scoring Bristle Dartboard System ($1,199.99, Escalade Sports, Oct 2026): camera-based dart recognition, a 360-degree LED light ring, and HDMI output to a TV.
A cheaper middle path is a plain bristle board plus a free scoring app on a tablet mounted beside it.
Do you need a dart board cabinet or surround?
Yes, if the wall is drywall you care about. A miss that lands in drywall leaves a hole every time; a cabinet or surround catches most of them, and a cabinet also hides the board when the room is used for something else.
| Protection | What it does | Example price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet with board | Doors with scoreboards, board included | Viper Vault with Shot King, $115.99 sale ($136.99 list); 22 in wide closed, 42.5 in open |
| Cabinet only | Doors, scoreboards, dart storage | Viper Metropolitan, $155.99 sale ($186.99 list) |
| Backboard | A large panel behind the board | Viper Resolute, $86.99 |
| Surround ring | Foam ring around the board’s edge | Unicorn Striker, $119.95 |
| Cabinet light | Clamps on, removes shadows | Viper Shadow Buster, $27.99 sale ($32.99 list) |
Measure before you buy a cabinet: an open cabinet like the Vault is 42.5 in wide, and it needs that width clear of door frames and light switches.
Is a magnetic dart board a good idea for kids?
For young children, yes. A magnetic board has no sharp points: the darts hold by magnets. The Accudart Magnetic Dartboard Set is 16 in across and costs $19.99 with six darts (Escalade Sports, Oct 2026). It is a toy, not training for the real game, so plan to move up to soft-tip or steel-tip when the kids are older.
How much room does a dart board need?
About 11 ft of floor from the wall for steel-tip play and a lane at least 3 ft wide, with 5 ft preferred. That covers the board, the 7 ft 9.25 in throw distance and room to stand behind the line. Soft-tip play at 8 ft needs a few inches more.
Do not put the lane across a doorway or a walkway. The room planner places a dart lane against a wall next to a pool or ping pong table and flags when it crosses their play areas. The height and distance guide has the mounting steps.
Who should not buy a dart board?
Skip darts, or wait, if any of these apply:
- No wall you can give up. A dart board needs a clear wall and a clear 11 ft lane. If the only spot is beside a doorway or a busy walkway, the risk is not worth it.
- Toddlers in the room unsupervised. Use a magnetic board or nothing.
- A shared wall and a night owl. Electronic boards are loud enough to hear through apartment walls.
If floor space is tight but you still want a table game, compare the foosball tables guide, or the pool table buying guide if the room is big enough.
Where do these numbers come from?
We did not test these boards in a lab. Specs and prices come from the brand or retailer listing, checked on October 6, 2026:

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what readers ask us most
Is a bristle or electronic dart board better?
Neither is better overall. A bristle board is the standard for steel-tip darts, quieter, cheaper and needs no power. An electronic board scores for you and uses plastic-tipped darts that are safer around kids, but it is louder and its segments wear out.
How long does a bristle dart board last?
Years of home play if you rotate it. Most good boards have a removable number ring, so you can turn the board and move the worn 20 and treble areas to a fresh spot. Never soak a sisal board in water; it swells the fibres and loosens the wire.
Can I use steel-tip darts on an electronic board?
No. Steel points punch through the plastic segments and can damage the sensor matrix behind them. Electronic boards are built for soft-tip darts only. Soft tips on a bristle board are also a poor mix: they snap and do not hold well in sisal.
What size is a regulation dart board?
A regulation bristle board is 17.75 in (451 mm) across. Soft-tip boards are measured by the target area, and 15.5 in is the regulation size. Compact electronic boards with 13.5 in targets are cheaper but play differently.
How much room do I need for a dart board?
Plan about 11 ft of floor from the wall for a steel-tip lane: 7 ft 9.25 in from the board face to the throw line plus about 3 ft to stand. The room planner checks a dart lane next to your other tables.
