How to Choose a Pool Table: Size, Slate, Build, and Brands
Choose a pool table by room size first, then slate, cushions, cloth, frame and warranty. Real WPA specs, brand tiers and October 2026 prices.
A pool table is the one game room purchase you cannot return easily. A slate table weighs about 600 lb or more, arrives in pieces, and is leveled by an installer inside your room. Get the size, the bed and the build right before you look at finishes.
What size pool table fits your room?
The room decides the size, not the other way round. A pool table needs its playing surface plus one full cue length on every side, so a shooter can stroke from the cushion with the butt of the cue clear of the wall. With standard 58 in cues, the minimums are:
| Table | Playing surface | Room needed (58 in cues) | Room needed (52 in cues) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 ft bar box | about 78 x 39 in | 12 ft 11 in x 16 ft 2 in | 11 ft 11 in x 15 ft 2 in |
| 8 ft home | about 88 x 44 in | 13 ft 4 in x 17 ft 0 in | 12 ft 4 in x 16 ft 0 in |
| 8 ft pro | 92 x 46 in | 13 ft 6 in x 17 ft 4 in | 12 ft 6 in x 16 ft 4 in |
| 9 ft | 100 x 50 in | 13 ft 10 in x 18 ft 0 in | 12 ft 10 in x 17 ft 0 in |
Measure wall to wall, then subtract anything that sticks out: a sofa, a bar, a radiator, a post. The game room planner does that subtraction and shows whether a ping pong table or dartboard can share the room. Exact playing surfaces vary by maker; our pool table sizes guide lists them.
Should you buy slate or non-slate?
Buy slate if you can afford it and your floor can carry it. The World Pool-Billiard Association requires slate at least 1 in thick, flat to within 0.020 in along the length and 0.010 in across the width, with tournament beds in three equal pieces backed by at least 3/4 in of wood. That three-piece, 1-inch, wood-backed bed is the standard on good home tables.
Cheaper beds fall into three groups:
- One-piece slate, common on bar boxes. Valley’s Panther home tables use 3/4 in slate on 7-foot sizes and 7/8 in on the 8-foot (gameroomshop.com, October 2026).
- Thin or unframed slate, which cannot hold staples, so the cloth is glued.
- Engineered boards such as Hathaway’s 1.75 in MDF “Slatetronic” bed or Fat Cat’s “Accuslate,” at a fraction of slate weight.
The full trade-off, including floor load and resale, is in slate vs non-slate pool tables.
Why does framed slate matter?
Framed slate has a wooden liner glued to its underside, and that liner is what the cloth is stapled into. The WPA specification calls for fasteners about every inch with at least 3/8 in penetration into the slate liner, and for the cloth to be stretched before it is fixed. Without a wood backing, an installer has to glue the cloth, which makes recovering harder and the cloth tension less even.
Ask the seller two questions: is the slate 1 in thick, and is it backed (framed)? Brunswick lists its Black Wolf 8-foot as “3 pieces / 1 in framed” slate, which is the answer you want. A listing that says only “slate” or “slate-like” usually means less.
What makes good rails and cushions?
Good rails hold the cushion at the right height and return the ball consistently from every point. The WPA sets rail width at 4 to 7.5 in including the cushion, and the cushion nose at 62.5 to 64.5 percent of the ball’s height. For a 2.25 in ball that is about 1.41 to 1.45 in above the cloth, which keeps balls from jumping off the rail.
The cushion profile on most home tables is K66. Ozone Billiards describes K66 as the most common cushion on home tables, and Championship’s Tour Edition replacement set ($159, October 2026) uses the same profile. Some premium tables use other profiles: Brunswick fits K-55 cushions made by Artemis to its Gold Crown VII. The profile name matters less than fresh rubber, correct nose height and rail bolts that pass through the rail into the slate.
How can you test a table’s cushions in a showroom?
Use the WPA cushion test. Place a ball on the head spot, shoot it through the foot spot with a level cue, a firm stroke and center-ball hit, and count how far it travels before it stops. The WPA specification says it should cover at least 4 to 4.5 lengths of the table without jumping.
A ball that dies after 3 lengths points to dead rubber, loose rail bolts or a slow cloth. On a used table, worn cushions are a common reason the price is low; recushioning adds labor and new cloth to the purchase. The same visit is a chance to look at the light over the table: a fixture hung too low blocks the cue on long shots, as the pool table lighting guide explains.
Which pool table cloth should you choose?
Choose worsted cloth for fast, accurate play and woolen cloth for lower cost and family use. The WPA requires non-directional, nap-free worsted cloth of 80 to 85 percent wool and 15 to 20 percent nylon for its events, and prefers 100 percent worsted wool. Woolen cloth has a nap, plays slower and pills over time.
| Cloth | Type | Blend | Weight | Price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simonis 860 | Worsted, tournament | 90% wool, 10% nylon | 27 oz per linear yard | from $327 |
| Brunswick Centennial | Merino wool with Teflon protector | 100% wool | 23 oz per linear yard | included on Brunswick tables |
| Championship Teflon Invitational | Woolen | 75% wool, 25% nylon | 21 oz | from $124 |
Prices are from ozonebilliards.com. Simonis 860 has been the World 9-Ball Championship cloth since 1992. Brunswick warrants Centennial cloth for one year, including stain resistance. Cloth is a wear part: budget to replace it, as the pool table cost guide shows.
How should the frame and legs be built?
The frame has one job: keep the slate flat for decades. Look underneath before you buy. You want a perimeter frame with cross members under each slate seam, solid wood or heavy plywood rather than particleboard, and adjustable leg levelers. The WPA asks that the bed deflect no more than 0.030 in under a 200 lb load at its center, which only a stiff frame achieves.
Legs matter more than they look. Four slim legs under a 900 lb table concentrate the load on small points of floor, so on suspended floors or carpet over a slab, ask for the leg contact area and use leveling feet or floor pads. Veneered MDF cabinets are normal even on good tables; Brunswick builds its Allenton from veneered MDF with solid hardwood molding. What matters is the structure under the slate, not the skin.
Which pool table brands are worth a look?
Brands sort into clear tiers by bed, cushions and warranty. These are list prices read in October 2026; dealers discount and add delivery.
| Tier | Brand and model | Bed | Price (Oct 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | Brunswick Gold Crown VII, 8 or 9 ft | 30 mm slate on a steel base | $12,495 / $12,995 | brunswickbilliards.com |
| Premium | Olhausen (dealer-priced) | slate, Accu-Fast cushions | ask a dealer | olhausenbilliards.com |
| Mid | Brunswick Black Wolf 8 ft | 1 in, 3-piece, framed | $4,500 | brunswickbilliards.com |
| Mid | American Heritage Halifax 8 ft | 1 in, 3-piece, K66 | $4,995 | gameroomshop.com |
| Mid | Imperial Eliminator 8 ft | 1 in, 3-piece, K66 | $2,995 | imperialusa.com |
| Entry slate | Brunswick Santini 8 ft | 1 in slate, 684 lb | $2,999 | brunswickbilliards.com |
| Bar box | Valley Panther home, 7 or 8 ft | one-piece 3/4 to 7/8 in | $5,495 to $5,795 | gameroomshop.com |
| Non-slate | Hathaway Augusta 8 ft | 1.75 in MDF | $1,874.99 | gameroomshop.com |
| Non-slate | Fat Cat Reno II 7 ft | Accuslate | $1,357.99 | gameroomshop.com |
Diamond builds its Professional, Pro-Am and Smart tables in 7, 8 and 9 ft sizes and its online store lists table options and parts rather than complete-table prices, so ask a dealer for a quote. Price bands for every tier, plus delivery and installation, are on the pool table cost page.
What does a pool table warranty actually cover?
A lifetime pool table warranty covers the structure, not the wear parts, and only for the first owner. Brunswick’s warranty, read in October 2026, covers defects in its tables for life, includes slate and cushions on tables made after January 1998, gives one year on Centennial cloth, excludes pockets, and is not transferable. It also requires installation and service by Brunswick or an authorized dealer.
Olhausen’s lifetime warranty follows the same pattern: it is non-transferable, covers its Accu-Fast cushions, excludes cloth and pockets, and is void if the table is not installed and serviced by Olhausen or an authorized dealer. At the other end, Hathaway gives 180 days on the Augusta and Fat Cat gives 90 days on the Reno II (with seven years on the playing surface). If you plan to move house, read how to move a pool table: an unauthorized move can void the warranty.
How long do delivery and installation take?
Plan on four to eight weeks from order to first break for a slate table. Brunswick tables sold through GameRoomShop ship to an authorized installer in about two weeks after a two-week build, and the retailer quotes four to six weeks overall, six to eight in the fourth quarter. Holiday buyers should order by early November.
Installation of a slate table means bolting the frame, setting and shimming the three slates, filling the seams with beeswax, stretching and stapling the cloth, and fitting the rails. The WPA tolerance for slate seams is 0.005 in. That is a job for a trained installer with a machinist’s level, and it is why most lifetime warranties require one.
Should you buy a pool table or a ping pong table?
Buy the game the household will play most, then check the room. A home 8-foot pool table needs about 13 ft 4 in x 17 ft 0 in; a full-size ping pong table needs about 19 x 11 ft for comfortable play. A long, narrow basement often suits ping pong; a squarer room suits pool.
A conversion top lets one table do both. Brunswick sells a table tennis conversion top caddy ($338, October 2026) for storing the top, and Butterfly sells pool table conversion tops. The bounce is not as good as a dedicated table, and the top has to be stored somewhere. If ping pong is the priority, start with our best ping pong tables guide.
Who should not buy a full-size pool table?
Skip a full-size table if your room is under about 11 ft 3 in x 14 ft 6 in, the minimum for a 7-foot table even with short 48 in cues. Short cues on one side are a fair fix for a tight wall; short cues on every side change how the game plays.
A full slate table is also the wrong buy for renters who move every few years, for upper floors you have not checked for load, and for anyone who wants a table they can move alone. A bumper pool table fits rooms a pool table cannot, and a non-slate table can be moved by two people after a basic teardown.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what readers ask us most
What size pool table should I buy for my room?
Buy the largest table whose playing surface plus two cue lengths fits your room on both axes. With 58 in cues that is about 12 ft 11 in x 16 ft 2 in for a 7-foot, 13 ft 4 in x 17 ft 0 in for a home 8-foot and 13 ft 10 in x 18 ft 0 in for a 9-foot. Test your own room, furniture included, in the room planner.
Is a slate pool table worth it?
For a table you plan to keep and play seriously, yes. The WPA requires slate at least 1 in thick for sanctioned play, and slate holds a flat, true roll for decades. Non-slate tables cost less and weigh about half as much, but their beds can sag or swell. See slate vs non-slate pool tables.
What are the best pool table brands?
Brunswick, Olhausen and Diamond sit at the top for home and pro tables, with lifetime warranties and authorized installers. Imperial, American Heritage and Valley cover the mid-range with 1-inch slate tables from about $3,000 to $6,000 (October 2026). Hathaway and Fat Cat sell non-slate tables under $2,000.
What cushion rubber should a pool table have?
K66 is the most common cushion profile on home pool tables and the profile used by the premium replacement cushions from Championship. The cushion nose should sit at 62.5 to 64.5 percent of the ball height, and a firm center-ball shot from the head spot should travel 4 to 4.5 table lengths under the WPA specification.
Does a pool table warranty transfer if I buy used?
Usually not. Brunswick and Olhausen both state that their lifetime warranties apply only to the original purchaser and require installation by the brand or an authorized dealer. A used table is bought on its condition, not on its warranty.
