Shuffleboard Table Buying Guide: Length, Playfield, and Room
Choose a shuffleboard table by room length, playfield wood and finish, climatic adjusters and weight. Sizes 9 to 22 ft, room math and October 2026 prices.
A shuffleboard table is the one game room table you size by length alone. A 9 ft table fits a large den; a 22 ft tournament table needs a room most houses do not have. Pick the length the room allows, then spend the rest of the budget on the playfield.
What size shuffleboard table should you buy?
Buy the longest table that leaves about 3 ft of standing room at each end. Tables are sold from 9 to 22 ft, and 22 ft is the tournament length. Longer tables mean longer, more skillful shots; shorter ones play faster and suit casual groups.
| Table length | Room length needed | Room width needed | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 ft | 15 ft 0 in | 6 ft 6 in | dens, bonus rooms, first table |
| 12 ft | 18 ft 0 in | 6 ft 6 in | the common home size |
| 14 ft | 20 ft 0 in | 6 ft 6 in | long basements |
| 16 ft | 22 ft 0 in | 6 ft 8 in | serious home players |
| 18 to 20 ft | 24 to 26 ft | 6 ft 8 in | bar-style rooms |
| 22 ft | 28 ft 0 in | 6 ft 8 in | tournament play |
These numbers are the table length plus 36 in at each end and 24 in at each side, the values the game room planner uses. The planner also checks whether a shuffleboard can share a long room with a pool table or a dart lane.
Do shuffleboard cabinets run longer than their size?
Often, yes, by a few inches. The size on the label is a class name, and makers measure the cabinet differently. Brunswick’s 12 ft Andover II measures 147-3/8 in long (12 ft 3-3/8 in), with a 132-1/2 in playfield inside it. Playcraft’s Woodbridge cabinets match their named length exactly (108 in for 9 ft, 144 in for 12 ft), with a playfield 8 to 12 in shorter than the cabinet.
When the room is tight, take the cabinet length from the spec sheet, not from the name, and add your end clearance to that. A table that is 3 in longer than its name eats 3 in of standing room.
Which playfield should you choose?
The playfield decides how the weights glide and how long the table lasts. Four builds cover the market:
| Build | Example (Oct 2026) | Playfield | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melamine over wood composite | Hathaway Avenger 9 ft | 1 in thick, 104 x 20 in, poly-sealed | $837.49 |
| Hardwood butcher block, polyurethane | Playcraft Woodbridge | 1.75 in thick, 15 in wide | $1,395 (9 ft) to $2,795 (16 ft) |
| Solid maple, polymer finish | Champion Qualifier | 1.5 in thick, 16.5 in wide | $3,995 (9 ft) to $4,395 (14 ft) |
| Solid maple, 1/4 in polymer | Brunswick Andover II 12 ft | 2.5 in thick, 20 in wide | $6,250 |
| 3 in maple, polymer | Champion Championship | 3 in thick, 20 in wide | $7,295 (9 ft) to $8,495 (22 ft) |
| 3 in hard rock maple, polymer | Hudson The Commercial | 3 in thick | $8,095 (9 ft) to $10,095 (22 ft) |
Melamine tables are fine for occasional family play. For a table that will be played every week for years, solid maple with a polymer finish is the standard: the polymer layer is what makes the surface hard, fast and repairable without sanding.
Why does a polymer finish matter?
A polymer finish is a thick, hard resin layer poured over the wood playfield. Champion, which introduced its “Lifetime Polymer” finish in 1988, applies a 1/4 in coating and says it removes the need to sand and refinish the board, and it guarantees the polymer surface for life to the original owner. Brunswick’s Andover II also uses a 1/4 in polymer resin surface, and Hudson finishes its 3 in maple boards with a tournament-grade polymer.
Without a polymer layer, a board has to be sanded and refinished as its finish wears; Champion calls that an annual chore on competing tables. Playcraft’s Woodbridge uses multiple sprayed coats of polyurethane, which plays well and costs far less, but is not the same as a poured polymer surface. Ask which finish you are paying for.
What are climatic adjusters and do you need them?
Yes, on any solid wood table. Climatic adjusters are screws or bolts under the playfield that let you correct its curve as the wood moves with seasonal humidity. A playfield that crowns or dips sends weights off line, and adjusters bring it back without taking the table apart.
Brunswick fits six to the Andover II; Champion and Hudson build them into their wood tables; and McClure sells replacement adjusters at $40.95 to $45.95 (October 2026). Budget melamine tables such as the Hathaway Avenger rely on leg levelers instead. Leveling and adjusting are owner maintenance: Playcraft’s warranty states that a table needing releveling is not defective.
What weights and powder does a shuffleboard need?
A table needs eight weights (four per side) and shuffleboard powder, sometimes sold as wax. Weights come in more than one diameter: Playcraft and Hathaway include 2-1/8 in weights (Hathaway’s are 9.5 oz each), and McClure sells 2-5/16 in sets. Buy weights to the diameter your table’s maker specifies.
Powder controls speed. It comes in graded speeds; Hudson, for example, sells an R4 “Ultra Glide” yellow powder as its fastest and a T3 brown as “faster,” and McClure sells yellow and brown in speeds 1 to 4. Start with a medium grade and adjust: if weights fly off the end, go slower. A board wipe or brush keeps old powder from clumping.
How is table shuffleboard scored?
Players slide weights to the far end, and only the weights in scoring zones past the lines count. On most home tables, zones score 1, 2 and 3 points, and longer tables add a 4-point zone at the end: Playcraft marks 1-2-3 on its 9 and 12 ft tables and 1-2-3-4 on its 14 and 16 ft tables.
In standard play, only the player whose weight sits farthest down the board scores in each round, earning points for every weight ahead of the opponent’s best. Knocking an opponent’s weight off is part of the game. Full house rules vary; agree on them before the first round.
How heavy is a shuffleboard table, and how is it delivered?
Heavy and long. Champion lists its Championship at about 50 lb per foot, so a 22 ft table weighs roughly 1,100 lb. Brunswick’s 12 ft Andover II weighs 575 lb, and Playcraft’s Woodbridge runs from 220 lb (9 ft) to 345 lb (16 ft). Check floor load before placing a long, heavy table on an upper floor.
Delivery path matters as much as weight. Playcraft ships its 16 ft Woodbridge playfield in a carton 197 in long, which has to turn every corner on the way to the room. Some tables avoid this: Champion’s Qualifier ships in three parts. Champion requires installation by a Champion-approved installer to keep its warranty, so price installation into the budget.
What does a shuffleboard warranty cover?
Playfield warranties are long; cabinet warranties are short. Brunswick covers the Andover II playfield for as long as the original owner has it but the cabinet for one year. Champion guarantees its polymer surface for life to the original owner, if a Champion-approved installer sets it up. Hudson backs its polymer playing surface with a lifetime warranty.
At the entry level, Playcraft gives one year on the Woodbridge, for residential use only, and excludes carpeting, wax and damage from moving. Hathaway’s Avenger has a 180-day limited warranty.
Who should not buy a shuffleboard table?
Skip a shuffleboard if your longest clear wall is under about 15 ft, if the table would block the only walkway, or if you want a game that also works for two players in a few minutes. Even a 9 ft table needs 15 ft of room.
A square room is better used by a pool table, and a small one by a foosball table or an air hockey table. Renters who move often should think twice about a 500 lb-plus table that may not fit the next home.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what readers ask us most
What are standard shuffleboard table dimensions?
Home tables are sold in lengths from 9 to 22 ft, with 22 ft the tournament size. Cabinets are about 24 to 31 in wide and the playfield sits about 30 in off the floor. The playfield itself is 15 to 20 in wide depending on the maker.
How much room do you need for a shuffleboard table?
Our planner adds 36 in at each end and 24 in at each side. That is about 15 ft for a 9 ft table, 18 ft for a 12 ft, 22 ft for a 16 ft and 28 ft for a 22 ft table, and about 6 ft 6 in to 6 ft 8 in of width. Test your room in the room planner.
What is the best wood for a shuffleboard playfield?
Solid hard maple, finished with a polymer coating. Champion, Brunswick and Hudson all build their playfields this way, from 1.5 in to 3 in thick. Polymer coatings do not need the sanding and refinishing older lacquered boards did.
What are climatic adjusters on a shuffleboard?
Adjustable screws or bolts under the playfield that let you push or pull it back to a true playing surface as humidity changes through the seasons. Brunswick's Andover II has six; Champion and Hudson fit them on their wood tables.
How heavy is a shuffleboard table?
From about 220 lb for a 9 ft Playcraft Woodbridge to about 1,100 lb for a 22 ft Champion Championship, which Champion lists at roughly 50 lb per foot. Brunswick's 12 ft Andover II weighs 575 lb.
